PRESS RELEASE: July 27, 2020

Senator Bernie Sanders Endorses David Zuckerman for Governor

BURLINGTON: Today, the Zuckerman for Vermont team announced the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders.

Senator Sanders said, “David has been fighting for all Vermonters for over 25 years. He has worked to raise the minimum wage, fought for workers’ rights, led the passage of marriage equality and championed climate legislation. As a public servant, in both the legislature and as Lt. Governor, David has worked with grassroots organizations and brought every day Vermonters’ voices to Montpelier. I am proud to endorse David and know he will continue to ensure Vermonters have an economy that works for all of us, by growing good paying Vermont jobs, fighting climate change and leading a progressive recovery out of this pandemic. I hope you will join me in supporting David to be our next Governor.”

In response to the endorsement, Lt. Governor David Zuckerman said, “I am honored to receive Bernie’s endorsement in my race for Governor. I was first inspired to run by him over two decades ago and I continue to be inspired by the work he has done to bring people together behind a progressive vision for our state and country. As Governor, I look forward to working with him, other elected leaders and activists from across Vermont to create programs and policies that support struggling Vermonters and build a clean, green economy out of this pandemic.”

Sanders and Zuckerman have a long track record of working together towards progressive legislation. Both support a living wage of at least $15 per hour, support workers’ rights, universal healthcare, and have structured much of their legislative work around combining job growth for struggling workers with bold climate action.

Senator Sanders’ endorsement in Zuckerman’s gubernatorial run follows his endorsement in Zuckerman’s Lieutenant Governor races in 2018 and 2016, and his races in the Senate and House. Sanders’ endorsement also follows the endorsement of all four of the co-chairs of the Senator’s 2020 bid for president: U.S. Representative Ro Khanna, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, State Senator Nina Turner, and Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Zuckerman has also been endorsed by Our Revolution, Rights & Democracy, People for the American Way, the Vermont Sierra Club, Moms Demand Action, the Vermont AFL CIO, CWA Local 1400, and AFSCME Council 93.
